Corgis, the adorable short-legged pups, have been charming hearts for centuries.

But did you know they also hold a special place in Welsh folklore?

Known in Wales for more than 3,000 years…

The Pembroke Welsh corgi’s origin story is intertwined with tales of fairies and magic.

Wrapped In Mystery

Legend has it corgis were the preferred companions of fairies. Living in the magical forests of Wales.

These mystical creatures are believed to have ridden on top the back of the corgis.

Helping them roam the woodlands.

According to Welsh folklore, the corgis were the guardians of the fairy realm.

All because of their strong senses and loyal nature.

Corgis would protect the hidden entrances to fairy dwellings. Making sure they’re safe from humans.

The Saddle Markings

One of the most fascinating aspects of the corgi folklore?

Their distinctive markings, found on their backs between their shoulder blades.

A darker line of fur known as “fairy saddle”.

According to the legend, the fairies used special saddles to help them ride on the corgis’ backs.

Now the marks on this special breed are believed to be prints left by their fairy riders.

Fairy Gifts

Another part of the Welsh legend explains how corgis came to live with humans.

When two human children accidentally stumbled upon the fairies…

Who gave them two corgis a gifts. To take back home with them and help them with the family’s work on the farm.

In fact corgis were originally trained to herd cattle.

All because of their short demeanour. Allowing them to avoid the hooves of cows easier than other breeds.

Embracing The Magic

Now whether or not you believe in their magical origins…

It’s undeniable how truly unique corgis are.

From being the late Queen Elizabeth’s pets of choice to today’s pop culture favourites.

With their playful nature and strong instincts, they still remind us magic can be found in the most unexpected places…
