Discovering a green puppy is a litter of newborns is not something you hear every day.

But for Audra and Trevor from Canada, this extraordinary event became a reality…

An Unexpected Surprise

Freya, their beloved valley bulldog, delivered a healthy litter of eight puppies.

But amidst the usual anticipation, an unexpected sight…

A puppy tinted with a vibrant shade of green.

The Miracle Unfolds

Initially they feared the worst for this unconventional pup.

Yet, to their surprise, the little green puppy showed signs of life. Prompting a mix of emotions ranging from confusion to wonder.

Although very rare, green puppies are often as healthy as their siblings.

But what actually makes them turn green?

The Science Behind It

Scientists have finally managed to shed light on this curious phenomenon…

It is all thanks to biliverdin, the pigment responsible for a green hue. This is usually associated with bruises.

You see, as the puppies develop, they come in contact with biliverdin. This pigment finds its way into the placenta or amniotic fluid.

Temporarily dyeing the puppy’s fur with a greenish tint.

Remarkable Green Stars

While Fiona, as Rhys and Mosher affectionately named their puppy, definitely stands out…

She’s not the only green dog to have graced the world’s stage.

From England to Italy, these puppies have captured hearts and sparked curiosity wherever they go.

As with the case of Pistacchio. A green puppy born in Italy in 2020. Bringing some hope and good luck during a difficult year.

A Fading Wonder

But as with all things extraordinary, this unique green coat is only fleeting.

In time, this vibrant hue fades.

But, the birth of green puppies is still a reminder of nature’s boundless creativity. A nudge to embrace the unconventional…

And find beauty in the unexpected.
