Running.. Jumping… Rolling Around…
Everyday dogs do activities which would drench a human in sweat if we were to do them.
But have you ever wondered if dogs sweat?
And can the apparent lack of moisture cause problems in hot summer sun?
How Dogs Sweat…
Contrary to popular belief dogs do sweat. It’s just not as obvious as in humans. For dogs it’s only part of a mechanism that keeps them cool.
Dogs sweat in certain parts of their bodies. As you likely know sweat comes out of glands. Now dogs have two types of glands which are merocrine glands and apocrine glands.
Merocrine glands are how we sweat. These are found in the parts not covered by fur. Such as noses and paws.
Apocrine glands however act in a different way. Rather than release sweat they have primarily been observed to excrete pheromones. Pheromones don’t cool a dog down, however they help other dogs and identify and get to know another dog.
Because of all this fur they are more susceptible in hot weather to overheating. Heat stroke is a dangerous issue that dogs have to deal with and as a pet parent you should always be on the lookout for ways to help keep them cool.
Heatstroke In Dogs
Dogs have other natural mechanisms to keep them cool like panting, but it’s no way near as effective as sweating. Heatstroke is a serious concern and when it happens it’s vital to get immediate help from a veterinarian.
Being aware of the signs of heatstroke will help you. Here are some:
- Heavy panting
- Dehydration
- Body temperature over 41° Celsius (feels warm to the touch)
- Red gums
- Rapid or irregular heart rate
- Excessive drooling
- Seizures
- Bad coordination
- Muscle tremors
- Unconsciousness
Helping A Dog Stay Cool
In hot weather you want to be proactive and help dogs stay cool. If your dog is playing outside or around the garden make sure they have access to shade and water. Also try to keep a cool place inside for them to go to when needed.
If you are out on a trip it’s important to never leave your dog in a hot car as the temperature inside can rise rapidly.
