Did you know this week is Pet Appreciation Week?

Yes, a whole week to show love and appreciation for our pets. (As if they don’t already get enough!)

Here at Your Pet Nutrition, we have thousands of wonderful pets and pet parents in our community. Many who write in daily with amazing stories.

In honour of our community we got in touch with a few. To ask them to share a little bit about themselves and their dog’s story and celebrate them this week.

You can find the stories of what makes their dogs special below…

Sylvie and June

Pet Appreciation Week: Sylvie the Collie Cross.

Name: Sylvie

Age: 9 (approximately, as Sylvie is a rescue)

Breed: Collie cross

Favourite Treat: Organic salmon bites

Favourite Toy: Snuffle mat

About Sylvie and June…

“Sylvie is blind and has dementia. She came from a bad rescue that neglected her hyperthyroidism – meaning she was very overweight and frightened. There was a long court case to save her and bring her home to me.

Sylvie is a lovely dog that is so funny in her ways. She likes to steal things, but often gets caught because she walks in slow motion thinking she can’t be seen. She has been noted to steal a whole bag of potatoes out of the pantry before!

I have so much love for Sylvie because she is so trusting and really put her trust in me, even though she was so damaged and scared when she came home.

It was only 10 months ago that she started barking, as she was too scared to before. She will let the vet do anything as long as I am by her side.

Sylvie saved my sanity, as we were both broken. We helped each other.”

Parsnip and Denise

Pet Appreciation Week: Parsnip the Wire Hair Fox Terrier

Name: Parsnip

Age: 8

Breed: Wire Hair Fox Terrier

Favourite Toy: Her ball

Favourite Treat: Relax + Restore

About Parsnip and Denise…

“Parsnip is a lovely natured dog who is cheeky and full of character.

She has recently recovered from a week in hospital after pancreatitis, but has bounced back with the help of Canine Prime and Relax + Restore.

She does so much with me and keeps me company while my husband works away in Saudi.”

Molly, Adele and Sally

Sally with Adele and Molly

Name: Molly and Adele

Age: Molly is 15 and Adele is 5 or 6 (both are guesses because they are rescue dogs)

Breed: Molly is a Border Terrier and Adele is a Cocker Spaniel

Favourite Treat: Mini Bonios

Favourite Toy: Their ball and stick.

About Molly, Adele and Sally…

“Molly, my Border Terrier, is like a lovable little teddy bear. She is very calm and totally unflappable.

Adele is a very loyal, mad Spaniel with plenty of energy. She is totally devoted to Molly – this is both lovely and a worry as Molly is 15 years old now.

Adele had a very difficult start to her life. She was a breeding bitch until she was 2 years old. Happily, the RSPCA rescued her and won the case. Initially I fostered Adele and then decided to adopt her after the court case was over.

Molly is very supportive towards Adele. She has taught Adele how to be a pet dog and has helped her to gain confidence and enjoy doggie activities. Adele has learned to love playing with sticks and balls and meeting new friends.

The girls both love playing with sticks, balls and other dogs. They enjoy playing on the beach, strolling in and out of the water and then curling up by the fire later. Doggie bliss.”

Tess, Kai and Lind

Pet Appreciation Week: Tess the Whippet

Name: Tess

Age: 17

Breed: Whippet

Favourite Treat: Fish4Dogs Training Superstars

Pet Appreciation Week: Kai the Whippet

Name: Kai

Age: 14

Breed: Whippet

Favourite Treat: Loves a cup of tea and ANY food

About Tess, Kai and Lind…

“Aged 17 years and one month, Tess is completely blind… but can sniff out a treat from 30 metres away! I would say she is the most self-willed, determined and stubborn Whippet in the world.

Tess came through vestibular disease at 15 and had her eye removed six months later due to a lens luxation. She even survived dive bombing out of our motorhome and onto the driveway at the age of 16 – she totally believes she is a cat with nine lives.

Kai is a Wag&Co dog who visits the elderly and lonely in the North East of England. He went through a vast number of tests to achieve this.

He was recently diagnosed with a mast cell tumor, which has reduced significantly after medication and using Canine Prime. His recent blood test showed results of a dog half his age!

He is a very vocal dog and I enjoy our chats all day long.”

Mika and Deborah

Name: Mika

Age: 11

Breed: Toy Poodle

Favourite Treat: Chewy Chicken Twists

Favourite Toy: A stuffed toy poodle called Ted, that looks exactly like Mika

About Mika and Deborah…

“Mika was rehomed to me when she was 8 and I can’t imagine life without her now. We’ve been together almost 4 years.

She’s very clever and funny, but also patient, loving and loyal. She will play with the energy and enthusiasm of a puppy, but curls up close to me at every opportunity.

This last year she has been my constant companion. She has kept me healthy and sane! Our walks together have been daily adventures because she is such fun to be with and she seems to make people smile.

Early on in the first lockdown my mother died 120 miles away and we weren’t allowed to visit. Having Mika to cuddle and take care of was a godsend at a time when I couldn’t hug family and close friends.

It must have been so hard for Mika to leave her previous owners and start a new life with me. But this little dog has brought me nothing but love and joy every single day. I hope she knows how much I love her in return.”
